About the Vermont State Flag

The current Vermont state flag was adopted in 1923.  It was generally felt that a unique flag design was in order as earlier state flags too closely resembled the flag of the United States.

The Vermont flag consists of the state coat of arms centered upon a field of blue.  Statute does not specify an exact rendition of the arms.  The shield may be of any shape, with or without a border.  However, there must be a landscape of natural color in the foreground, with high mountains of blue above and extending into a yellow sky.  There must be a pine tree of natural color extending from near the base to the top; three yellow sheaves of grain are to be placed diagonally on the right side; and a red cow must be shown standing on the left side of the field.

The shield is surmounted by a stag-head crest, probably invented by Secretary of the Governor and Council Robert Temple, or by the Boston engraver who designed the commission.  Below the shield are two pine sprigs, crossed at their stems, added by statute in 1840.  These are said to represent the pine sprigs worn by Vermonters at the 1814 Battle of Plattsburgh.  The Vermont state motto, "Freedom and Unity," is inscribed in white lettering on a red streamer draped across the stems of the pine boughs.
