About the Texas State Flag
Perhaps the greatest distinction of the Texas state flag is the degree to which it is loved by those over whom it flies. It is also the most widely recognizable of all the state flags, probably because of these proud Texans who display their beloved banner every chance they get, and in every conceivable venue. The famous Lone Star flag was even chosen by a contestant on the TV show Survivor as the one luxury item he was permitted to bring into the wilderness.
Today's flag first flew as the national flag of the Republic of Texas; it was officially adopted in 1839. It was then adopted unchanged as the state flag when Texas joined the Union as the 28th state in 1845, thus making it our nation's oldest state flag.
The single star inspired the nickname Lone Star State, extremely appropriate for a state of rugged individualists. The colors red, white and blue stand for bravery, strength, and loyalty, just as on the national flag. The national colors are a reminder that the Texas state flag was once a national flag.
The legislation to adopt the Lone Star as the national flag of the Republic of Texas was proposed before the Third Congress of the Republic by William Wharton. However, the designer of this most famous of the fifty state flags is unknown.
