About the Tennessee State Flag
The Tennessee state flag's relatively simple design consists of a red field edged on the right with a white stripe which is in turn edged by a somewhat broader blue stripe. In the center of the red field, a white circle rings a field of blue containing three large white, five-pointed stars. The theme of three as illustrated by the three stars and three colors is widely interpreted to represent Tennessee as the third state to enter the Union after the original thirteen. This misconception even appeared in the October, 1917 issue of National Geographic magazine in an article describing Tennessee's flag.
The Tennessee flag's creator, Captain LeRoy Reeves of the the Third Regiment, Tennessee Infantry, explained his design as follows: "Tennessee is divided into three regions - the Tennessee River divides West Tennessee from Middle Tennessee, and East Tennessee is the area of the Smokey Mountains and east - the Grand Divisions. The three stars are of pure white, representing the three grand divisions of the state. They are bound together by the endless circle of the blue field, the symbol being three bound together in one .... an indissoluble trinity. The large field is crimson. The final blue bar relieves the sameness of the crimson field and prevents the flag form showing too much crimson when hanging limp. The white edgings, contrast more strongly the other colors."
