About the South Dakota State Flag
Until 1963, the state flag of South Dakota had a different design on each side. One featured the state seal, the other a golden sun. The 1963 legislation combined the two designs into one, which now appears on both sides of the flag.
The current state flag consists of a rendition of the state seal centered on a blue field. The original design of the state seal was created by Senator Ernest May and Doane Robinson, secretary of the State Historical Society. The redesign is that of Will Robinson, Doane Robinson's son.
The seal depicts a farmer and a rancher, important figures in the economy of South Dakota. A steamboat upon a river, most likely the Missouri, symbolizes transportation and trade. On the left bank of the river the mining industry is represented by a smelting furnace. A grove of trees and a sawmill illustrate the timber industry and manufacturing. Peaks in the background are most likely a representation of the Black Hills.
Golden
points of sun ring the seal. Arranged around the sun are the words
"South Dakota The Mount Rushmore State," also in gold. The
official state nickname was changed in 1992 from the Sunshine State to The Mount
Rushmore State to avoid confusion with Florida, the other "Sunshine
State." South Dakota State Flags
