About the South Carolina State Flag
In the fall of 1775, the Revolutionary Council of Safety asked Colonel William Moultrie to design a flag to be flown by South Carolina troops. Moultrie selected for the field a blue to match the color of their uniforms, and on that field placed a crescent to resemble the silver emblem worn by the soldiers on the front of their caps.
The palmetto, now the state tree, was added later to commemorate Colonel Moultrie's heroic defense of the palmetto-log fort on Sullivan's Island against the attack of British warships on June 28, 1776. Cannon shells could not penetrate the tough palmetto logs. The fort was named Fort Moultrie in honor of the Colonel.
