About the Rhode Island State Flag
Rhode Island was the third of the original thirteen colonies to formally adopt a state flag; New Jersey and New York had done so the previous year. Although the flag was not officially adopted until 1897, elements of the flag had been flown by Rhode Islanders dating back to the American Revolution when the colors white and blue were carried by regiments from the state. The stars representing the 13 original states were also used on flags of the Continental Regiments from Rhode Island during the Revolution, and similar banners were used during the War of 1812 and the Mexican War. The anchor has been associated with Rhode Island since its founding. Under the 1643 Cromwellian Patent, the Provincial Assembly adopted the anchor as the seal of the province when establishing the Providence Plantations. The following year a more liberal charter was granted by King Charles II to the Colony of Rhode Island and the Providence Plantations, and the anchor was again chosen for the seal with the addition of the word "Hope" over the head of the anchor.
The current flag of Rhode Island is essentially unchanged from the 1897 design. A gold anchor surrounded by thirteen gold, five-pointed stars is centered on a field of white. Below the anchor a blue streamer displays the state motto, "Hope."
