About the North Dakota State Flag

The state flag of North Dakota is almost identical to the banner carried by the North Dakota Infantry in the Spanish-American War in 1898 and the Philippine Island Insurrection the following year.  The only change is the addition of the name North Dakota inscribed on the streamer below the eagle.  This flag became official in 1911 upon passage of legislation introduced by North Dakota State Representative Colonel John H. Fraine.

During the 1950's there was some discussion within the state government concerning the possibility of changing the flag.  A commission was established to consider the issue, and eventually determined that the flag "too closely resembled the coat of arms of the United States and that the flag was not symbolic of North Dakota."  The changes suggested by the commission were eventually rejected by the state legislature.

The North Dakota state flag's dark blue field surrounds a bald eagle clutching the familiar bundle of arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other.  In his beak, the eagle holds a streamer bearing the words "One nation made up of many states."  The shield on the eagle's breast has thirteen stripes, representing the original thirteen states.  The fan shaped design above the eagle represents the birth of the new nation of the United States.  The name North Dakota is inscribed on a red scroll below the eagle.
