About the New Hampshire State Flag

One of our oldest states, New Hampshire did not adopt a state flag until 1909.  Prior to that time, numerous regimental flags served to represent the state.  The New Hampshire flag consists of the state seal centered on a blue field and surrounded by a wreath of laurel leaves with nine stars interspersed.  New Hampshire was the ninth of the original thirteen states to ratify the Constitution.

The state seal of New Hampshire consists of a circular field crossed by a straight horizon line of the sea, above the center of the field; the sun rises above the sea in the background.  The field is encompassed with sprigs of laurel.  The center piece of the seal is the frigate Raleigh with the United States flag flying astern.  The Raleigh was built at Portsmouth in 1776 as one of the first 13 warships sponsored by the Continental Congress for a new American Navy.

In the foreground of the state seal, a granite boulder symbolizes the Granite State's rugged terrain and the character of its citizenry.  The seal is encircled by the wording "Seal of the State of New Hampshire 1776" in yellow lettering.
