About the Nevada State Flag

The state flag of Nevada was designed by Louis Schellbach in the late 1920's.  The earlier version of the flag was found to be extremely expensive to produce, as it contained 30 - 40 different color shades.  A movement to change this flag began in 1926 when Lieutenant Governor Maurice J. Sullivan published notices in Nevada newspapers announcing a contest for a new design for the official state flag.  Mr. Sullivan offered a $25 prize for the winning design; however, he noted that the honor of having one's own design chosen would outweigh the monetary award.  

Early in 1927, the Nevada legislature appointed a committee to select a design for the new state flag.  The design of "Don" Louis Schellbach III, a state employee, was chosen out of hundreds of entries.  Don Schellbach left Nevada to work at the Museum of the American Indian in New York City in May 1927.  He later became known as "Mr. Grand Canyon" for his more than 24 years working for the National Park Service at the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

The Nevada state flag consists of a cobalt blue background with  a design in the upper left quarter.  Two sprays of sagebrush, the state flower, with stems crossed at the bottom, form a half wreath.  Within the sprays is a five-pointed silver star with one point up.  The star is emblematic of the famous Comstock Lode discovered in Nevada in 1859, one of the richest deposits of silver and gold ever found.  The name Nevada is inscribed below the star and above the sprays.  Above the wreath a scroll bears the words "Battle Born," a state nickname.  The scroll and the name Nevada are of golden-yellow.  Silver and gold are the Nevada state colors.
