About the Montana State Flag

The state flag has its origins in Colonel Kessler's Montana Volunteer Unit, First Montana Infantry.  During their service in the 1898 Philippine Insurrection of the Spanish American War, Kessler felt the need to distinguish the Montanans from other units.  The flag they flew eventually became the official state flag, with the only change being the replacement of the words "1st Montana Infantry, U.S.V." with the name Montana.

The Montana flag consists of a rendition of the state seal centered on a field of "Old Glory Blue."  The name Montana is set above the seal in yellow lettering.

Montana's seal was initially designed in 1865 by Francis M. Thompson, who had engraved seals for Montana's first mining districts on the ends of ax handles.  Thompson's committee felt a seal should include the essential elements of Montana's economy and future.  The plow, shovel and pick in the foreground represent Montana's agricultural and mineral industries.  The lush forest, mountains and water, under a bright sun, are emblematic of the states timber, scenic and recreational resources.  The rapids in the river are the Great Falls of the Missouri.  At the bottom of the seal, a white streamer bears the state motto, Oro y Plata, "Gold and Silver."
