About the Minnesota State Flag  

The Minnesota state flag consists of a royal blue field surrounding the state seal, which in turn is surrounded by a circular white field.  State statute proscribes that the flag itself be surrounded by a narrow gold border and golden fringe.   

On the state seal, a settler cultivates his field with an animal-drawn plough; behind him his rifle sits at the ready, propped against a stump in which a hatchet is embedded.  The farmer is turning his head to watch an Indian galloping past, bareback on a brown horse, wielding a sword.  A stand of Norway pines, the state tree of Minnesota, appear on a rise in the background.  The Falls of St. Anthony swirl past this scene, as the rising sun casts its rays upon all.  Spanning the sky is a red banner with gold letter proclaiming Minnesota as L'Etoile du Nord, "The Star of the North."  The seal is surrounded by a border of pink-and-white lady slipper, the state flower.

The state seal with its lady slipper border is further encircled in a white field with a yellow border.  The name Minnesota is emblazoned in red lettering on the lower part of the white field.  A star-shaped border surrounds the state seal.  It consists of nineteen five-pointed stars arranged symmetrically in four groups of four stars each and one group of three stars.  This latter group is in the upper part of the circular white emblem.  In this group of three stars, the uppermost is the largest and represents the north star.   The lady slipper border within this design contains the dates 1819 (the year Fort Snelling was established), 1858 (the year Minnesota became a state) and 1893 (the year the official state flag was adopted).
