About the Massachusetts State Flag

The state flag of Massachusetts bears a blue and gold representation of the state coat of arms surrounded by a field of white.  Prior to 1971, the state flag depicted the coat of arms on only one side, with a pine tree on the other.

A Native American stands before an Algonquin shield on the coat of arms, holding a large bow in his right hand.  In his left hand, the Indian points an arrow downward in a symbol of peace.  Above the man's right shoulder is a white, five-pointed star, signifying Massachusetts' status as one of the original thirteen colonies.

The crest consists of a blue and gold wreath from which arises a bent arm wielding a sword.  The sword is meant to illustrate the state's motto, which is inscribed in Latin in gold lettering on a blue streamer encircling the sides and bottom of the shield.  Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem translates as "By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty."  The motto is attributed to Algernon Sydney, English soldier and politician, who penned it in 1659.
