About the Maine State Flag

The flag of the state of Maine was adopted by the state legislature in 1909.  The flag features a field of deep blue surrounding the Maine coat of arms, which is seen on the state seal.  the shield consists of a scrollwork yellow oval surrounding an outdoor scene.  A pine tree dominates the picture, representing the vast forests that cover approximately ninety percent of the state's land area.  A moose rests peacefully at the foot of the tree; the state animal is symbolic of Maine's reverence for wildlife.  The foreground is water, representative of the abundant water resources, both salt and fresh, found in the state.  Above all is a clear blue sky.

The shield is supported by a farmer on the left and a sailor on the right, emblematic of the state's agricultural and maritime industries.  Below the shield the name Maine is inscribed in yellow on a stylish blue banner.  Above the shield shines the North Star, symbolic of Maine's distinction as the northernmost state at the time of its admittance to the Union.  The word Dirigo appears on a white banner below the star.  The term is from the Latin for "I guide" or "I direct."

Interestingly, the Maine State Flag as defined by law does not exist.  There are no examples of the flag that correspond to the written description of it found in the Maine Statutes.
