Kentucky State Flag
The Kentucky General Assembly authorized the creation of an official state flag in 1918, but it would take another ten years before all concerned could agree on a design. In 1928 a drawing of the flag was incorporated into the Statutes - marking the first time an illustration became part of Kentucky's laws.
An art teacher for the Frankfort City Schools, Jessie Cox Burgess, was commissioned with designing Kentucky's flag. Burgess placed the state seal on a field of blue, surrounding it with branches of the Kentucky state flower, the goldenrod. The phrase "Commonwealth of Kentucky" appears in matching yellow above the seal.
The seal itself was authorized in 1792, six months after Kentucky became a state. The state motto "United we stand, divided we fall" is emblazoned above and below the figures on the seal. The motto is believed to be from "The Liberty Song," popular during the American Revolution and a personal favorite of Isaac Shelby, Kentucky's first governor. The two men on the seal, a frontiersman and a statesman, are meant to represent all the people. Their embrace illustrates the meaning of Kentucky's motto. Kentucky State Flag
