About the Hawaiian Flag

Prior to the arrival of English explorer Captain James Cook in 1776, Hawaiians did not use flags.  In 1794, Hawaiian King Kamehameha received a British flag from Captain George Vancouver.  He was likely the first to raise a flag in the kingdom.  Hawaii was a British protectorate until 1816.  That same year, Kamehameha the Great commissioned the Hawaiian Flag, which has represented Hawaii for over 180 years.  It is the only US state flag to have flown over a kingdom, a territory, a republic, and a state.

The Hawaiian flag consists of eight stripes of red, white, and blue, representing the eight major islands.  The British Union Jack emblazoned in the upper right corner honors Hawaii's historical  relationship with Great Britain.  It also represents a stylized puela (a triangular standard lying across two crossed spears called an alia), which is the symbol of the Hawaiian ali'i - chief.
