About the Delaware Flag

The Delaware state flag was adopted on July 24, 1913.  The flag consists of a field of colonial blue surrounding a buff-colored diamond containing the state coat of arms.  According to members of the original commission established to design the flag, the shades of buff and colonial blue echo those of the uniform of General George Washington.

The ship within the diamond is meant to recognize the importance of commerce; the symbols of agriculture: wheat, corn, ox, and farmer, mark the importance of agriculture to the state.  The soldier pays tribute to those who fought in the Revolutionary War.

Beneath these symbols but still within the diamond is a streamer inscribed with the state motto, Liberty and Independence.  The date December 7, 1787, in white lettering below the diamond in the blue field, refers to the date that Delaware became the first state to ratify the Constitution of the United States.  Because of this prompt action on the part of Delaware's founding fathers, the state became the first in the Union, earning Delaware the first position in national events.
