About the Colorado Flag
Colorado became a possession of the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. However, it would be another 100 years and then some before Colorado would have its own state flag. Colorado was still without a flag when it became the 38th state in 1876. It was not until 1911 that the Colorado State Legislature adopted Andrew Carlisle Johnson's design, and Colorado could raise its very own flag.
The center white stripe symbolizes Colorado's snowcapped mountains. The blue symbolizes clear blue skies. The blue and white of the state flower, the Rocky Mountain Columbine, are also sometimes seen in the stripes. The C of course stands for Colorado; the letter's red color represents the region's reddish soil. It is unclear whether Johnson intended the yellow disc within the C to symbolize the sun or gold. Considering the importance of mining to Colorado's history, and the representation of the mining industry on the state seal, the disc is likely a reference to gold. However, it can certainly be a symbol for Colorado's usually sunny skies as well. Adorning the flag is a cord of intertwined silver and gold, ending in tassels of each color.
The original legislation adopting Johnson's design did not specify precise shades of red and blue, and controversy arose. In 1929, the General Assembly stipulated that the colors of red and blue be the same as those of the national flag. Controversy also arose over the size and placement of the letter C. In 1964, the General Assembly further modified the original legislation by specifying the distance of the C from the staff, as well as the letter's diameter.
