About the California Flag

The current design of the state flag of California has its origin in a battle that took place in the summer of 1846 at Sonoma.   At the time, California was under Mexican rule.  On June 14, 1846, a small group of settlers marched on the Mexican garrison at Sonoma.  They took Mariano Vallejo, commandant of the garrison, prisoner.  They then issued a proclamation declaring California to be a Republic independent of Mexico.  This rebellion became known a the Bear Flag Revolt, so named for the new republic's flag depicting a grizzly bear and a five-pointed star over a red bar and the words "California Republic."  The grizzly bear symbolized great strength; the lone star referred to the lone star of Texas.  The new flag flew for less than a month.  It was soon discovered that the United States was already at war with Mexico.  The Bear Flag was replaced with the American flag.  However, in 1911 the Bear Flag was adopted by the state legislature as the official flag of the state of California.
